Man ist, was man isst
Today I saw the photo essay book of Peter Menzel 'The Hungry World', which contains photographs of families and their foods from all over the world and the way it makes a connection between people and food reminded me the famous German quote man ist, was man isst ( eng. you are what you eat). All of the photographs are taken nearly from the same angle and they all contain family members and their all food available in their houses, which could be considered somehow as typological photo series. Most of the time food dominates the photographs and when it is not, you realize that something is wrong, since those families are not so wealthy. I think it is nice that only the food and the appearance of family members on the photographs could tell so much about different socioeconomic situations, tradition and culture of a family or in general a country. It is possible to see sometimes the dominance of American junk food, sometimes only vegetables and fruits and the different ways and places that families choose to give poses.

Alternative Movie Posters
I found some movie posters, which are designed by designers and not used for the advertisement of that movie. They are just fun and nice designed posters. Here are some:

Ten Minutes Older
'Ten Minutes Older' is a short documentary film directed by Herz Frank in 1978. It composed of one camera shot without any cuts and without any spoken word, which makes it very successful, because during the movie it is possible to see an incredible variety of feelings and facial expressions. Ten Minutes Older is one big shot of the children who watch movie on the cinema hall and how they react to the movie. The viewer never see what happens on the screen, it is just possible to hear the sound of the movie and see the faces of children. The importance of the documentary is that it stresses out that the art is here to make us experience the feelings and unite people with the power of same feelings. Herz Frank mentions that
“If you are observant, if you look not only with your eyes, but also with your heart, the life, for sure, will present you with some particular discovery. Then, the reality recorded by you will gain the artistic value, become in line with art, and will always excite people. The facts and events can become old. They can become history. The feelings we felt regarding those events stay with us. Therefore, art is the only living bridge between people of various generations, between time periods.”
In 2002 an amount of directors made each of them a 10 minutes long movie which is dedicated to the Herz Frank's movie and collected under the names of "Ten Minutes Older: Cello" and "Ten Minutes Older: Trumpet". As a concept the movies have in common the issue of time and while watching it, it is possible to think that some smart and talented directors are just brainstorming about time. Jean Luc Godard, Jim Jarmush, Werner Herzog, Aki Kaurismäki and Spike Lee is just 5 names from the list of 15 director who has its movie on the collection.
In the both of the movies I really liked the one of the Werner Herzog and Jean Luc Godard the best. The documentary of Herzog is about a tribe in Africa which was discovered 20 years ago and was still in the stone age before the discovery. So it is a smart idea to talk about time in a such situation.
10 000 Years Older:
The version of Godard shows the last minutes of youth, fame, thoughts, memory, love, silence, history, fear, eternity and cinema. I liked the idea behind the movie and the visualization of that moments.
Dans le noir du temps:
If you are interested in watching other movies, you can find some other of them on youtube or you can just order a DVD of the movie. And for further information: http://www.tenminutesolder.com/

Sexism and Commercials
Unfortunately we're all grown up in a society, where gender roles dominates our whole existence and tell us how to live, which standardize people and mostly causes negative discrimination against women or homosexuals. Nowadays the media and especially visual media supports and recreates stereotypes and gender roles again and again. In my opinion if something supports discrimination, it is worthless and meaningless, even if it has been made very successfully. Therefore artists have to be very interested in ethics and make right decisions, because the thing they do - especially for commercial artists - could be very effective and have interpreted negatively. Anyhow; today I saw a lot of advertisements, which were very supportive to reproduce gender roles. That's why I am telling all this stuff and writing this blog entry to be more sensitive about these kind of ethical issues. And here it is

Water Changes Everything
While we were trying to find names for our imaginary corporatation to design its visual identity in project studio, we had permisson to choose a non profit corporation, like non-govermental organizations. At the end we didnt choose any non profit corporation, but I think it is a very exciting process to create visuals for those kind of organizations, because they need visual elements more than every other organization to manipulate people. I found out a very successful non profit organization which is called charity: water and whose main issue is to bring clean water for everyone in developing countries. I first realized the company while I was looking at their poster about the importance of water. Then I watched a lot of short movies which they created to tell about their main argument and I think they are really nice and effective. In 2011 they celebrated their 5th birthday and as it is a tradition to make a movie for their birthdays, there is a smart and joyful video for their fifth birthday too. Furthermore their logo is one that works very well for the issue of water. Therefore I highly recommend to visit the website of charity: water.

Graphic Design and Cinema
The first time that I realized graphic design is an important issue, I was looking at the posters of İstanbul Film Festival in the internet. As I am interested in cinema since my high school years, I was very fascinated to realize that someone is able to visualize my passion about cinema in some kind of posters. In fact when I look them as a junior graphic design student, they are not the best pieces of graphic design, they are just some clean and neat poster works. But they are still functional and I emotionally love them. In this post I want to show some of those posters and then more in general some visuals about the relationship of graphic design and cinema from Turkey and world.
International İstanbul Film Festival:

I made a quick research on the posters of film festivals all around the world. And here are the results:
