Water Changes Everything

While we were trying to find names for our imaginary corporatation to design its visual identity in project studio, we had permisson to choose a non profit corporation, like non-govermental organizations. At the end we didnt choose any non profit corporation, but I think it is a very exciting process to create visuals for those kind of organizations, because they need visual elements more than every other organization to manipulate people. I found out a very successful non profit organization which is called charity: water and whose main issue is to bring clean water for everyone in developing countries. I first realized the company while I was looking at their poster about the importance of water. Then I watched a lot of short movies which they created to tell about their main argument and I think they are really nice and effective. In 2011 they celebrated their 5th birthday and as it is a tradition to make a movie for their birthdays, there is a smart and joyful video for their fifth birthday too. Furthermore their logo is one that works very well for the issue of water. Therefore I highly recommend to visit the website of charity: water.

Graphic Design and Cinema

The first time that I realized graphic design is an important issue, I was looking at the posters of İstanbul Film Festival in the internet. As I am interested in cinema since my high school years, I was very fascinated to realize that someone is able to visualize my passion about cinema in some kind of posters. In fact when I look them as a junior graphic design student, they are not the best pieces of graphic design, they are just some clean and neat poster works. But they are still functional and I emotionally love them. In this post I want to show some of those posters and then more in general some visuals about the relationship of graphic design and cinema from Turkey and world.

I made a quick research on the posters of film festivals all around the world. And here are the results:

Graphic Design in Iran

On the very first lecture of our project studio the instructor Elif Ayıter told about the lack of visual taste in Turkey, because we changed our visual system 80 years ago with the revolution of modern republicanism. Then she added (and mentioned in her blog too) that west and the east of the Turkey have both a better and developed taste than us. I was familiar with the visual taste of Europe and other western countries, since till today I watched lot of European and American movies, saw some posters, illustrations, web sites and visited some European countries. But I was not sure about the Eastern, if it is good enough to have the quality of a good visual taste. I decided to make a research on Iran, which is quite famous with its cinema and I personally watched some movies from Iran. I found some works of graphic designers from Iran.

After researching about graphic designers I decided to look at newspapers in iran, because it could be the best way to have an idea of the taste of Iranian people. And it looks not bad...

Pictograph

A pictograph is used to express a a meaningful phrase in a visualized way. Pictogram is a kind of visual language which contains photographic elements like symbols. In our daily life we see a lot of pictogram.

Logotype versus Symbol

Symbol and logotype stands for different kind of visual elements. A logotype simply does not include any other designed objects out of typographic elements. In other words it is pure typography. On the other hand a symbol logo contains some kind of designed visual elements and type at the same time.

While I make my research I found lot of creative logotypes, which I would like to share to show how it is possible to make smart and joyful logos just by using the typography.

And these are some symbol logos

Visual System, Corporate Identity and Visual Identity

Visual system is based on corporate and visual identity. Corporate identity is the signature of an organization, which should not change in years. It has to reflect the main idea and the philosophy behind the organization. In such cases it exist a corporate identity manual, which includes some kind of standards about the identity of a company. Visual identity is the main part of a corporate identity. It includes logotype, symbol, typeface, color pallates, which stay constant (generally), since it is the identification of the company. Visual identity should be oriented in a various kind of medium such as package, web site, poster, clothing and etc... ,

While I make my research I had a look at some works of designers on visual identity. I put a visual identity design of Roger Odone Design Studio to see the design process and its results.

Second one is the visual identity of 'aromas cafe' from India. Although it is not the best logotype I have ever seen, it is nice to see that a logotype works for different alphabets and could still reflect the identity of the company.

Furthermore it is possible to see these brands logo in a lot of different materials too. If you want to look at it click the link below: http://www.behance.net/gallery/AROMAS-Cafe/370360

The last one is the indoor and outdoor designs for Mtv. It fascinated me to see that there is a lot of different possibilities to reflect the visual identity of a company, if one is creative.
