Today I saw the photo essay book of Peter Menzel
'The Hungry World', which contains photographs of families and their foods from all over the world and the way it makes a connection between people and food reminded me the famous German quote
man ist, was man isst ( eng. you are what you eat). All of the photographs are taken nearly from the same angle and they all contain family members and their all food available in their houses, which could be considered somehow as typological photo series. Most of the time food dominates the photographs and when it is not, you realize that something is wrong, since those families are not so wealthy. I think it is nice that only the food and the appearance of family members on the photographs could tell so much about different socioeconomic situations, tradition and culture of a family or in general a country. It is possible to see sometimes the dominance of American junk food, sometimes only vegetables and fruits and the different ways and places that families choose to give poses.
